Increased Electric Demand and Aging Infrastructure Highlighted in NYISO Power Trends 2025
The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) today released its annual “state of the grid” publication, 2025 Power Trends: The New York ISO Annual Grid and Markets Report. The report highlights the most important issues impacting the future of New York’s electric grid based on economic data, demand forecasts, and a changing generation mix.
The Independent Power Producers of New York, Inc. (IPPNY) supports the findings of Power Trends and points to the importance of urgent action by the State to ensure a reliable grid as New York strives to achieve its climate goals. This year’s edition of Power Trends showcases the increased uncertainty of future system conditions and the impact that several energy intensive projects in New York’s economic development plans will have on the grid. Additionally, the report notes an aging generating fleet, with more than 11% of the State’s energy production coming from units that are at least 50 years old. Power Trends importantly remarks that modernizing aging generation would provide numerous economic and environmental benefits, while assisting with the transition to a cleaner and more reliable electric grid.
IPPNY President and CEO Gavin J. Donohue said: “While IPPNY supports the findings of this important report, the NYISO’s study clearly demonstrates that the time for State action is now. Energy consumption will continue to increase as New York strives to achieve its electrification goals, and that will require a diverse energy portfolio, as well as modernized generation units. This report further proves that the aging units and repowering opportunities need to be addressed as they are critical components of New York transitioning to a cleaner energy future in a reliable, affordable, and responsible fashion.”
Power Trends also discusses the importance of competitive markets in signaling for new private investment in supply to meet the rising consumer demand for electricity. Specifically, the report highlights the changing nature of the electric grid that requires enhancements to competitive electric markets. IPPNY’s members are poised to continue investing in the State and its communities as New York strives towards its climate targets.
