IPPNY Statement on the NESE Pipeline

The Independent Power Producers of New York (IPPNY) supports today’s announcement by the DEC to advance the Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) pipeline project. Pipeline projects, such as NESE, show the recognition that natural gas is a crucial resource to maintaining the reliability and safety of New York’s electric grid during the State’s energy transition, while establishing an “all-of-the-above” approach, as indicated by the Draft State Energy Plan. The members of IPPNY support the goals of the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, but they must be achieved in a practical, reliable, and affordable manner. This project will represent an essential investment in New York’s energy infrastructure and help address the growing demand from residents, businesses, and economic development.

IPPNY President & CEO Gavin J. Donohue said, “New York’s energy landscape is at a pivotal moment. Currently, 90% of the electricity generated in New York City is from natural gas and oil, and I commend the DEC for recognizing that natural gas will continue to play a key role in the State’s energy future. Until the zero-emissions dispatchable resources, which are needed to electrify the grid reliably, have been identified and developed, natural gas will remain a necessary transitional component of New York’s fuel mix. As a result, the NESE pipeline is essential to maintain access to affordable and reliable electricity, while promoting health and safety for all New Yorkers, especially during times of extremely hot or cold weather.”
